The Australia pub menu is a marvellous thing. Reliable, well-priced and comfortingly familiar no matter which watering hole in the country you find yourself in.

Some counter meals have largely left us over the decades - lamb's fry has been replaced by chicken wings, the pork slider is the new prawn cocktail. However, many dishes are still at the bar, regardless of whether they need a taxi called or not.

Calamari rings

Hoops of deep-fried, breaded calamari were on every pub menu in the 1980s. At most city pubs the reconstituted rubber ring has been replaced by its posh relative, salt-and-pepper squid.

Great local pub - Recipes

We had lunch here whilst staying with family in Springfield Lakes. It's a pleasant place with comfy tables and leather couches. We ate indoors because of the cooler day.

The process of ordering and service was excellent. We ordered fish and chips a Caesar Salad and a Burger and all meals were great for pub food. Washed down with a couple of local beers it made for a pleasant lunch time experience.

Further to my review on 21/04/18, the tavern rang apologised and offered me a voucher to try the tavern again, gave them my name address etc.
SIX WEEKS later still no voucher, very shabby not at all impressed

Eight of us went out for dinner. One kids meal was requested without cheese, it came with cheese and couldn’t be replaced cos they had ran out of spaghetti bog. Seven of the meals came out, six with ridiculous amounts of salt on the chips, the seventh was sent back as it was too salty to eat. The eighth meal was brought out twenty minutes after everyone else’s. Not impressed at all, very disappointing. Spent over $100 not happy

Great local pub - Recipes

A very friendly host welcomed us without a booking and the restaurant was quite full. The food was quick to arrive even though they were busy and very hearty sized too. Good value, honest pub grub. The open fire was a welcome spot to sit after our meals as it was quite chilly outside.

The tavern has a very local feel to it and seems like a family run affair. They do have slot machines, pool table and the works though. Pretty big overall with a huge bar area and a small restaurant. Seemed it is mainly frequented by the locals and a good way to get a feel of the local culture.

We didn't have much hopes but were very happy with the options on offer. The flatbread we ordered for antipasti turned out to be a pizza itself! Pizza and pesto pasta were yum. Plenty of wines were on offer and the house wine was cheap but crisp. The owner was very friendly and gave us huge servings just to taste the wines - we almost didn't order a wine )

Very light on the pocket, this is definitely a good dinner place if you are in the Barossa Valley.

It&aposs been a tough few months for our locals, having to close their doors (and outside spaces) due to the coronavirus lockdown.

The Ship Inn

One of the best places to appreciate a great Devon sunset is The Ship at Teignmouth.

Located on the back beach, The Ship Inn is a popular location for residents and holidaymakers all year round.

It has a beach front terrace and it&aposs famous for its live music nights.

Turf Locks

The Turf is one of the very few pubs in the country which cannot be reached by car (but you can walk or cycle there so it&aposs a great place for social distancing exercise).

Applebys, Torquay

This popular sports bar with a terrace looking out to sea is a great place to go on a sunny day.

You can sit back and relax while looking out at Torquay seafront.

And if you get peckish they also serve a selection of dishes ranging from sandwiches, burgers and steaks.

The Thatched Inn

The Thatched Inn is a traditional historic pub situated in the small village of Abbotsham.

Formerly a Tradesman pub, The Thatched Inn has been the heart of the local community for the past 400 years.

Salt hill Pub is an ideal meeting place for friends and family, proudly owned and operated by brothers Joe and Josh Tuohy. We have been offering our blend of honest Irish-American inspired comfort food, affordable craft beers, good humor and live music since June 2003.

Salt hill is named for a neighborhood in Galway, home of our grandparents. Today, much of what we know about good food and good people comes from ‘Ma Tuohy.’ Stop by soon for inventive pub fare and some lively conversation and you’ll know what we mean when we say “Welcome to Salt hill.”

Joe and Josh have been offering their inspired blend of honest Irish-American comfort food, perfect pints, good humor and living music since June 2003 at the pub in Lebanon. In February 2007 we opened Salt hill Pub on Main Street in Newport, and our pub in Hanover followed, in February 2010. In December 2015 we re-opened the Shanty in Newbury, NH, and in spring 2017 we opened our fifth pub, in the former Seven Barrel Brewery in West Lebanon.

"I can't believe that I've never reviewed this place before. The food, alcohol, and service are all good. The side room with the fireplace is nice on a chilly night. The menu covers Irish favorites like Guinness stew, shepherd's pie, fish and chips, etc. but also have fish tacos, burgers, mussels, etc. Everything that I've eaten here has been good," wrote Yelp user Dia D.

"Ames is really stepping it up with this one! Not going to lie, finding a non-chain restaurant that isn't barbecue in Ames can be difficult. That being said I was very pleased with Dublin Bay. The atmosphere of Dublin bay is very chill and has plenty of seats. I especially enjoyed the local pub feel I got when walking in. It also isn't too crowded of a place so I've never had to wait to be seated. Your stomach will 100% enjoy the food! I've never been to Ireland so I can't say how authentic the food is but the menu is full of Irish dishes. The portion really depends on what you order. I ordered a lamb burger so the portion was a little small compared to the stew which was surprisingly big. Either way I still really enjoyed my meal," wrote Yelp user Abe C.

This great 13th century pub is right by the sea in Somerset

Sitting as in does right in the heart of Exmoor, surrounded by beautiful green fields and hills it faces right out to sea.

You can while the hours away watching the boats go by or children playing in the harbour and you are only down the road.

No long drives down narrow Devon or Cornwall lanes, this gem of a pub is right here in Somerset, not far from Bridgwater.

The Ship Inn, or Bottom Ship as it is known locally, in Porlock Weir is unique.

We went on a lovely sunny day, everyone was outside enjoying delicious, home cooked meals and local beers while basking in the hot sun and sea air.

Manager Ringo Capp said: "It is so great to be open again, we have been really busy, as busy as summer, people are so supportive and happy to come out again, it is fantastic and going really well.

"It is such a lovely spot and we have lots of tables and chairs outside so we are able to manage well especially during the day when the weather is good.

"We are looking forward to opening up inside on May 17, we have been doing a lot of work during lockdown and the place is looking great with a fantastic new menu.

"We are all so grateful to be back," he said.

The Ship Inn is one of the oldest inns on Exmoor, with roaring log burners in the winter and a large outdoor seating area and children’s play area for the summer months.

Owners Royston and Caroline pride themselves on offering visitors hospitality in the manner of a traditional English country inn.

The pub is running a reduced menu until they can open fully on May 17, but there are lots of pub classics like fish and chips, pies and Sunday roasts and there is a very impressive children&aposs menu.

The Bottom Ship is a historic 13th old coaching inn, with thatched roof and a fascinating maritime heritage, facing as it does right on to the sea which once was a busy harbour.

Nowadays the harbour plays host to moored fishing boats and yachts which glistened in the midday sun last week.

While Porlock is not a great swimming beach there are lots of activities including paddle boarding, mountain hiking and cycling which is popular in the area.

If you like, after your lunch at the inn wander down to the little harbour behind and visit the artisan shops in the old harbour buildings selling anything from local art, jewellery and pottery, and there are cafes and a shop selling famous Porlock oysters.

There is ample parking opposite and with the playground and beach it is the perfect place to take the family for a day out by the sea.

Booking is recommended if you want to eat at the pub, especially when the weather is fine.
